I had the pleasure to be present for 2 days there this week at 2 different schools. I wanted to submit a brief write up on how those two days went and how each school designed their own fund raisings in a unique way.

Deep Creek HS - Day 1

Donna Lamb, the foodservice manager there, embraces fund raising as a common thing in her cafeteria year round. When we approached her about showcasing her school as a GCNF contributor, she openly welcomed it.

She, coincidentally enough, had already started the week before collecting money for the local food bank because she had seen on the news that the Chesapeake area food bank was low on funds. She decided to do the fundraisers side-by-side and split the proceeds between the two organizations.

With the materials sent to her for the Change Our World event, she transformed her cafeteria into a fundraising haven. It was beautifully decorated with displays everywhere inviting the students to contribute to the causes. The first day alone, she raised nearly $100 and plans to raise funds till the end of May. Her goal is $500.

Crestwood Intermediate - Day 2

Renee Swank, designed her own unique, interactive spin on the promo. She designed different colored coins for each grade level. A student can earn "coins" by the amount they donate for their grade as well as their classroom. She asks each student to write his or her name and homeroom on each colored coin. She then writes how many "coins" on each one they donated. She sits at a table throughout lunch and allocated the coins with tape and the kids ran over to a map on the wall and put up their coins on the map. At the end of the day, she adds up all the coins by grade and homeroom and notes it. At the end of the month, she will announce a winning homeroom for each grade and we are going to do a pizza and ice cream party for each of them. The coins earned are as follows:

$.01-.25 — 1 coin
$.26-.50 — 2 coin
$.51-.75 — 3 coin
$.76-1.00 — 4 coin

Renee started this fundraiser last week and has already surpassed her goal of $250. While spending the day, she introduced me to children who had exceptional stories to share.

One 3rd grader found change totaling $1.87 solely by cleaning the floor of her Mom and Dad's cars. Another 3rd grader got money from her own savings and by lobbying her grandmother and mother. A 4th grader went around to her entire family at home and collected money from them. A 5th grader has used his weekly allowance to donate and will do so until the event ends.

Thank you to all for your support and contribution.

VINNY GIACINTO
Regional Sales Manager - School Foodservice Division Schwan's Food Service, Inc.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-52592690978553502122008-05-13T08:27:00.002-05:002008-05-13T08:31:53.097-05:00Beavercreek, Ohio - City Schools' Change our World Report Card
The milk bottles have been emptied and the money has all been counted. Today a check has was sent to the Global Child Nutrition Foundation in the amount of $2239.53 for the Change our World campaign. That amount, combined with additional monies that were deposited in the district's name from purchases of Schwan's pizza and J&J pretzels should bring us just about to the goal of $2500. Our students were very generous and the staff encouraged a little friendly competition to keep them giving during the entire month of April!

Sue Pope and Natasha Nuttbrock's hard work earned their students a pizza party at Ferguson. Mrs. Kunk's students at Shaw will also get a pizza party since they had the largest donation of any elementary class. In the Lunchlady competition, we had two milk bottles turned in with over $100 in change. They were from Sharon Millsap, Beavercreek High School manager, and Margarita Greenleaf, Fairbrook Elementary School manager. Additional thanks go out to Angie Creech for the great bulletin board and photos from the fundraising efforts of her business law classes! Maddie Pfirrman, a third grade student at Main Elementary, touched us all by donating nearly $50 of her saved allowance money.

Thanks to Reiter Dairy for donating the milk bottles, and to Victoria Maxwell for putting the Change our World labels on them. And thanks to each and every one of you who made a donation. Even if it was just a little change, it has helped to change our world by proving the foundation for a school feeding program in a country where there is no such program.

Thanks again, JoAnne Robinett, Supervisor, Student Nutrition

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-25878443925132479382008-05-13T08:09:00.004-05:002008-05-13T08:32:22.561-05:00Montgomery Intermediate Goes Global on Earth Day
<img style="height: 150px; width: 200px; float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/SCmV51q0xPI/AAAAAAAAAMg/nyVfgbd57QM/s320/Montgomery-web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5199852065667728626" />Montgomery Intermediate School in Montgomery, Texas, took part in the "Change Our World" Campaign to raise student awareness about global child hunger and encourage global citizenship the week of April 21, 2008.

This campaign is a joint effort of the School Nutrition Association and the Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF). Using Earth Day, April 22, as ingathering day, each student was asked to contribute at least a quarter to this effort. Montgomery Intermediate ended up raising $258.25 to forward on to GCNF.

"This is the first time we have participated in a fundraising effort for a cause with our students," stated Carolyn Watson, Director of Child Nutrition. "I appreciate Principal Jada Mullins helping us create student awareness of this growing problem. Their excitement to give to other children across the globe was inspiring."

Schwan Food Service, Inc. also donated funds to this cause in the name of Montgomery ISD based on the purchase of featured new products.

"We were able to introduce our students to two new pizza products with whole grain crust and discover student acceptability of this product and give to global hunger at the same time. What a win-win," said Ms. Watson.

The U.S. Congress has recognized April as Global Child Nutrition Month. Nearly 300 million of the world's children are caught in the debilitating cycle of poverty and hunger. The Global Child Nutrition Foundation wants to end child hunger by providing expertise and a proven track record in creating and sustaining school feeding programs in underdeveloped countries.

Tina Bozarth, cafeteria manager at Montgomery Intermediate stated, "It was energizing to see the most wonderful students giving from their hearts."

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-38066798886333475622008-04-25T08:17:00.002-05:002008-04-25T08:21:53.915-05:00MSD of Wayne Township, Indiana Makes Big Change
We completed our Change Our World campaign promotion in early April with results far exceeding expectations! We set an initial goal of $2500.00 and actually raised $3868.53!

Each manager set up their own fund raising program, and it was fun to see what they planned. We had a school that displayed the flags of 40 different countries and played music each Friday as the money was collected at the register. At one of our elementary schools, a student donated the $20.00 she had received for good grades on her report card. The pair visited the troubled region of Darfur in Sudan and worked to get the crisis noticed by those in power. They labeled the situation the "first genocide of the 21st century." Mr. Clooney shared some of what he learned during the trip with the group.

In relation to the Darfur crisis, Nick Clooney said "I have been a reported for 50 years. Maybe three or four stories in your lifetime are life-changing and you go in as a reporter and come out as an advocate. You don’t usually like to do that but this time I did. So yes, it was life-changing." He did not ask people to donate money to the cause, but instead wanted people to know about the urgent action that is needed for the cause. He asked the people to contact their congress people, senators and media to continue to let more people know about what is going on in Dafur and create action.

Continuing with the theme of giving back, the group brought change to donate as part of the National "Change our World" campaign and played Bingo for 25 cents per card. Schwan’s Food Service provided the game and prizes. All total, the group raised $400.75 that will be donated to The Global Child Nutrition Association on behalf of the chapter. At Billy Earl Dade Middle Learning Center in Dallas, Texas, we found that with the right reason, change can happen quickly and positively. We were very excited to have the Dallas Independent School District selected to host a kick-off event for the Change Our World campaign. We decided to have the event at Billy E. Dade Middle Learning Center, a middle school with about 450 students in grades sixth through eighth. We were ecstatic to make our donation of $310.25, which we know will help make a real difference.

We started the Change Our World event on Thursday, February 28, 2008, by showing the "Change Our World" digital video during lunch period. I was amazed that instead of talking louder and drowning out the video, which often happens when large groups of students are brought together, the students not only watched it, but were drawn into it. This is when I knew our Change Our World event was going to be a success.

At Billy E. Dade Middle Learning Center the students wear uniforms, so our plan on Friday was to have a "Jeans Day" where students, teachers and administrators could wear jeans for a donation to the Global Child Nutrition Foundation.

The people who donated to the foundation also got their names placed on a paper donation "coin" which was hung on the wall. The posters, danglers and the donation coins are still hanging up in our school, reminding the students how they were able to make a difference.

It really touched me that we were able to raise the money we did. Many of the students who attend Billy E. Dade do not have a lot of extra to give, but they saw that the GCNF is a good cause. I think they were able to relate with the children the GCNF is helping. For some students, the meal they receive at school is their only real meal for the day. That is why the GCNF and the "Change Our World" digital video really touched home.

We couldn't have accomplished what we did without the support of David Welch, the principal at Billy E. Dade Middle Learning Center. He gave us the opportunity to make a difference in our world.

At Billy E. Dade we hope others will see our $310.25 donation and realize it doesn't matter how big your school is or how large your donation is. Each donation brings the GCNF a step closer to achieving its goals.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-25118746992170374912008-04-07T09:05:00.001-05:002008-04-07T09:08:23.530-05:00Beavercreek, Ohio City Schools Update
Just 4 days into our observation of Global Child Nutrition Month and great things are happening. We have distributed about 190 of our 250 milk bottles. We have penny wars going on at the high school and a home room competition at one of our middle schools. We had a third grade student donate her allowance savings from a year - nearly $50!

Our "Lunch Lady vs. Lunch Lady" Challenge is gaining momentum too. Hunger affects children around the world when it doesn't have to. The Change Our World campaign was created to fight global child hunger by supporting the Global Child Nutrition Foundation. GCNF is an organization committed to eliminating childhood hunger across the globe through the creation of self sustaining school nutrition programs. By nurturing young bodies and minds, we can build a more stable, peaceful world.

Encouraged by the Martha Rawls Smith Elementary (NAC) Nutrition Advisory Council and nutrition manager Samantha Thornton, the school raised and donated $500.76 to help the fight. The students were challenged to collect quarters for change. The homeroom that collected the most out of the 4th and 5th grades was awarded an Ice Cream Sundae Party with all the trimmings. The winning class for 4th grade was Mrs. Christy Wood and the 5th grade winner was a tie between Ms. Sharon Aspinwall and Mrs. Pam Aspinwall.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-34698664453419821892008-04-07T08:48:00.005-05:002008-04-16T10:35:07.562-05:00School Nutrition Association Staff Support Efforts to Eliminate Child Hunger
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 0px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/SAYcUwoLAAI/AAAAAAAAALw/aAwXbcwwAz4/s200/Staff-COW-Final-4-1-08-webfriendly.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189866763567431682" height="150px" width="200px" />School Nutrition Association (SNA) staff members are participating in the Change Our World Fight Against Global Hunger fundraising campaign and they are excited to announce that they have surpassed their fundraising goal. With one month still to go before the culmination of the campaign, the SNA staff has collected over $1,010 and they are not finished yet. They will continue their fundraising efforts for the entire month of April which has been designated Global Child Nutrition Month.

The Change Our World campaign is a partnership between Schwan's Food Service, Inc. and SNA's Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF). The campaign's mission is to educate and to raise awareness about global hunger. Everyday there are 300 million hungry children in developing nations around the globe. With the Change Our World campaign, Schwan's and the GCNF are working to eliminate childhood hunger across the globe through the creation of self-sustaining school feeding programs.

SNA staff members have found a number of ways to collect money for the Change Our World campaign. Each day, staff and visitors to SNA drop their extra change (and dollar bills!) into a money jar kept in the headquarters lobby. Staff members have been conducting bake sales in the SNA staff lunch room and others have taken their Change Our World fundraising efforts home to their families and to their churches. Since the Change Our World fundraising campaign kicked off in January, a number of generous companies and schools have participated in fundraising events for the campaign.

To learn more about the School Nutrition Association or its Global Child Nutrition Foundation, see the Related Links on the right side of this article.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-47997490305551188682008-04-01T08:58:00.002-05:002008-04-07T09:04:10.191-05:00Global Child Nutrition Month Kicks Off At Beavercreek City Schools, Ohio
Today may be April Fool's Day, but our Student Nutrition department is using today to kick off Global Child Nutrition Month. We have chosen to participate in a campaign that will help underdeveloped countries put self sustaining school meal programs in place. Statistics show that when food is offered at school, children, especially girls, are much more likely to attend school and gain the education and skills that can break the hopeless cycle of hunger and poverty that is all they know.

Today we will be giving out with each lunch a plastic token that looks like a coin. The idea behind that is that the token will remind a student to bring a coin back in for us to donate to the Global Child Nutrition Foundation.

There is some information about the campaign in each cafeteria, and you can visit www.changeourworldonline.org to learn more about how a little change can change the world. The website includes classroom activities and facts about world hunger.

I have 250 pint milk bottles to use to collect coins. There will be a collection bottle at each cashier stand for the month of April. If you would like a bottle either for yourself, or for your class, just let me know and I will get you one. At Schwan plants and offices around the U.S. (Marshall, Minn., Stilwell, Okla., Deer Park and Pasadena Tex., Salina, Kan. Hollywood, Fla., Atlanta, Ga. and Florence, Ken.), employees raised more than $5,000, mostly in spare change, to support a unique new giving promotion.

The Change Our World campaign is a partnership between Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., a Schwan subsidiary, and the Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF). The campaign’s mission is to educate and raise awareness about global hunger. Everyday there are 300 million hungry children in developing nations around the globe. With the Change Our World program, Schwan and the GCNF are working to eliminate childhood hunger across the globe through the creation of self-sustaining school nutrition programs. Schwan’s employees surpassed their goal of $5,000.

“The Schwan donation will help get the momentum going,” said Pat McCoy, vice president of school food service for Schwan. “We can post results on the campaign Web page so schools can see that we are contributing too.”

The Schwan Valentine’s Day campaign was only the beginning. Change Our World will be launched in thousands of schools across the U.S. in March and April. In addition to the educational curriculum of Change Our World, hundreds of thousands of students in the U.S. will have a chance to make a positive impact in the lives of millions of other children around the world. Spare change given by students in the U.S. will help feed millions of hungry children. Also, students and school staff can post their success stories or challenge other schools in their region through the Change Our World Web site. To help with the campaign, the School Nutrition Association declared April as Global Child Nutrition Month.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-80742355042478156522008-02-08T15:56:00.005-06:002008-03-04T15:15:42.288-06:00Hillsborough Pride Elementary Surpasses Their Own Goal
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/R826IeQoSsI/AAAAAAAAALM/hzKJQfKF3BE/s200/hillsboroughpride01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173996201643100866" />We received exciting news at Pride Elementary in early January when we were asked to be one of the first schools to take part in a “Change Our World” campaign kick-off event.

Our school, which is located in Tampa, Florida, and is part of the Hillsborough School District, was one of the first schools asked to help the Global Child Nutrition Foundation through the "Change Our World" campaign and we were ready to help.

We started by setting a goal of $1,000 for our school, an amount we thought was achievable. To our delight, we were able to raise $2,400 through our four-day event, surpassing our original goal by $1,400, something we are really proud of.

We kicked off our event on January 22, 2008. We decided that our event would last for four days and include many events that students could take part in.

At the kick-off I talked to our 887 students and 65 educators, who range from kindergarten through fifth grade, about GCNF and what they do. The students also got to watch the “Change Our World” digital video, which told the story of Neenah and how she found that when everyone is able to give a little, it adds up quickly and can make a real difference. We played the digital video during the morning show as well as during lunch time in the cafeteria.

The excitement didn’t end there. The students learned about eating habits and nutrition in Central and South America and that week during lunch time, they got to watch a video about school feeding and nutrition in Pakistan.

<img style="height:25%; float:left; margin:10px; padding:3px; width:25%; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/R8263OQoStI/AAAAAAAAALU/J2UME9-PIXo/s200/hillsboroughpride02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173997004801985234" /><img style="height:25%; float:left; margin:10px; padding:3px; width:25%; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/R827COQoSuI/AAAAAAAAALc/60o_9ZsiPR4/s200/hillsboroughpride03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173997193780546274" /><img style="height:25%; float:left; margin:10px; padding:3px; width:25%; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/R827K-QoSvI/AAAAAAAAALk/Mru8Ml0PWT8/s200/hillsboroughpride04.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173997344104401650" />

This campaign really touched our students. We had children that donated their entire savings, bringing their piggy banks to school. We even had a parent, at the urging of their child; write a check for $100. These things show just how important “Change Our World” is to our students.

Parents, teachers, and the District Student Nutrition Services also got into the act. A parent and teacher bake sale raised even more money for the campaign. Our Hillsborough County Schools Nutrition Services General Manager, Mary Kate Harrison, was pleased with the event. She thought it was well done and felt the students and staff did a great job. She thinks that schools around the country will have success similar to ours.

To cap this fun week, Mary Begalle, National Marketing Manager – School Foodservice, Pat McCoy, Vice President School Foodservice, from Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., myself, and a handful of other Schwan’s Food Service employees greeted children in the cafeteria. We handed out beads and I went on the morning show in celebration of Gasparilla. I really got into the fun and dressed as a pirate for the Friday event.

As a bonus to our school, the teacher from each grade level whose class collected the most money will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card to spend on learning tools for their classrooms. Also, the class that raised the most money total received a Big Daddy’s pizza party, complete with beads, balloons and a conga line. Everyone had a great time!

We hope that this isn’t the end of the “Change Our World” campaign for us. We want to continue teaching our students about nutrition in other countries by working to get the children pen pals from around the world and by bringing in guest speakers to talk about the eating habits in other countries.

It’s amazing what we can do together when we set our minds to it.
James Quenneville
Student Nutrition Manager
Pride Elementary School

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-81888922981782210532008-02-08T08:15:00.000-06:002008-02-08T08:27:12.315-06:00Events in Washington, DC, Raise Awareness of World Hunger
February 6, 2008 – Students in the nation's capital have joined the fight to end world hunger. Nearly 300 students at Cardozo High School in Washington, DC, as well as local school foodservice directors, industry, SNA and Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF) staff, participated in the nationwide kick-off of the "Change Our World" promotion.

A two-day, fundraising campaign took place at SNA Headquarters on January 31, 2008, and Cardozo High School the following day, raising money for GCNF and generating excitement leading up to Global Child Nutrition Month, which takes place in April. GCNF programs combat childhood hunger around the globe by advancing sustainable and effective school feeding programs.

First, an event at SNA Headquarters brought together several school foodservice directors from Montgomery County (MD), Harford County (MD), Cecil County (MD), Prince William County (VA) and District of Columbia Public Schools with staff from SNA, GCNF, The Schwan Food Company™ and T. Furr & Associates to promote this campaign. The next day, several of the adults met with students at Cardozo for an assembly program. Barbara Belmont, CAE, Executive Director of SNA, shared with the kids that as many as 300 million of the world's children—a number equal to the total population of the entire United States—are trapped in the grinding cycle of poverty and hunger.

David Goodman, Executive Director of Food Services for DC Public Schools, also encouraged the kids about their ability to make a difference. Goodman is known in his district for improving the school lunches partly in response to student complaints about the poor quality of their previous cafeteria food. These changes have received an overwhelming "thumbs up" from the kids—food sales in select schools have increased as much as 500%!

After the assembly, Cardozo students got the chance to take action, donating their spare change to end world hunger through the "Change Our World" campaign. During the lunch period, milk jugs were placed throughout the cafeteria to collect student donations. Their efforts attracted the attention of Washington, DC, Mayor Adrian Fenty and DC Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, who joined the students to sample the new lunch fare being offered and to take part in "Change Our World" campaign activities.

Altogether, these two events raised more than $800 for GCNF. Part of the donations also went to the DC Central Kitchen, an area food bank. Most importantly, these events empowered kids in the capital of one of the world's most powerful nations to reach out and help other kids both here and around the globe.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-14910808054882095712008-01-30T07:13:00.000-06:002008-01-30T14:24:50.351-06:00Evergreen Elementary Helps Fight World Hunger!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4AU_fD_W_aI/R6Cm1mjyeFI/AAAAAAAAAGg/V911-VqttiQ/s200/236.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161308612780521554" />It's not every day that you and your students get the opportunity to make an impact, so we were very excited at Evergreen Elementary when we were contacted to host a "Change Our World" kickoff event.

Our school is located in Spanaway, Washington, and is part of the Bethel School District. This observance is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the solutions to global hunger and poverty.

Among these are the school-based feeding program initiatives supported by GCNF. At any given moment, as many as 300 million of the world's children are trapped in the grinding cycle of poverty and hunger. According to the World Food Programme, 130 million of these children do not attend school; and among those who do, most do not receive meals during school hours.

We may not be able to resolve all sorts of natural and political forces, but GCNF and SNA know that nurturing and educating a child is the single most effective means of breaking the cycle of poverty. And because a hungry child cannot learn or thrive, a society whose children live in hunger will never prosper. GCNF works to help nations build and sustain school feeding programs.

School communities can become a part of the solution to global hunger. Whether helping to raise money for GCNF, the World Food Programme, Bread for the World, or one of dozens of other hunger action organizations-or just raising awareness about hunger in the U.S and abroad—school nutrition professionals are taking important steps toward ending childhood hunger.

About The Campaignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11415748796842095070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247111271492706783.post-92124527315196061292008-01-13T20:00:00.000-06:002008-01-30T14:56:38.717-06:00Time To Change Our World
Hunger affects children around the world when it doesn't have to. The Change Our World campaign was created to fight global child hunger by supporting the Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF). GCNF is an organization committed to eliminating childhood hunger across the globe through the creation of self-sustaining school nutrition programs. By nurturing young bodies and minds, we can build a more stable, peaceful world.

This isn't a simple task, which is where the Change Our World campaign comes in. It is our hope that people will see the work of GCNF and be compelled to give. It's not the size of the gift that makes a difference. If every child in America that eats school lunch gave a single quarter it would equal around $7.5 million—all from a single quarter.

Please watch the video, Neenah Makes a Difference.
